Cycle bridge between Borgharen and Bosscherveld

Why is the bridge being built?

The bridge is part of RivierPark Maasvallei, a large nature and recreation area along the River Meuse in the Netherlands and Belgium. It brings together nature, landscape, culture and flood protection. The area is popular with walkers and cyclists.

At the moment, there is no convenient crossing between Borgharen and Bosscherveld. This means people have to take a detour. The new cycle bridge will make it easier to cross the River Meuse and will create a continuous route. From 2026, you will be able to cycle or walk a full loop around the Maasvallei.

Timeline

The bridge will be built in 2026. Preparations will start in the spring. From May, the first outdoor work will be visible.

In the summer, the pillars will be placed in the River Meuse and the bridge will be assembled. After that, the cycle paths on both sides will be built and the surrounding area will be finished.

If everything goes according to plan, the bridge will be completed by the end of 2026. You will be able to cycle or walk across the bridge from early 2027, once Stuwweg has also been completed. Please note that the timeline may change, for example because of the weather or the water level in the River Meuse. If this happens, we will let you know in good time.

What will you notice if you live nearby?

At first, you will notice little of the work. The contractor will mainly be preparing the site.

From May, the work will become visible in the area. Temporary access roads will be built and work will be carried out on the banks of the River Meuse. In the summer, you will see the bridge take shape step by step. Finally, the cycle paths will be built and the area will be tidied up and finished.

What has been considered in the design?

The bridge has been designed to fit into its surroundings and to be pleasant to use. It has a slim, understated design, so it does not distract from the landscape or the weir. Cyclists and pedestrians will have a wide, safe connection with a comfortable gradient. The River Meuse itself has also been taken into account: the bridge will obstruct the water as little as possible. The chosen materials are durable and require little maintenance.

Residents’ meetings

Residents’ meetings were held in Borgharen and Boschpoort on 8 and 9 April 2026. These meetings gave residents and other interested people the chance to find out more about the plans for the cycle bridge. Visitors could view the design, planning and construction approach, and ask the project team questions. Around 120 people attended in total.

Questions and points raised

Some questions and concerns came up several times during the residents’ meetings. The main topics are explained below, with extra information where needed.

Road safety was one of the main topics raised. Questions focused mainly on the connection to Bosscherweg and the crossing from Sluisdijk to Schutkolkweg.
Bosscherweg
The Municipality of Maastricht is working on improvements to Bosscherweg. We have looked at how the road is used and listened to residents’ experiences. In the longer term, we will work with the neighbourhood to explore ways to reduce traffic.
A new design has also been made for the connection between Oude Smeermaeserweg and Bosscherweg. This is part of a larger project around Stuwweg, together with Rijkswaterstaat. Work is expected to start after the summer of 2026 and continue until May 2027.
Sluisdijk crossing
The contractor is designing the crossing from the cycle path to Schutkolkweg, together with project partners.
The design will include measures to slow traffic down. This will make the crossing clearer and safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
There have been questions about lighting on the bridge. The Municipality of Maastricht does not light cycle paths outside the city. This means there will be no lighting on this bridge either. The bridge is also in a Natura 2000 area, where light can disturb nature.
After the bridge has opened, we will look at how often it is used. If extra measures are needed, we will explore the options and take action.
The bridge is mainly intended for cyclists, but pedestrians will be able to use it too. There will not be a separate footpath, but the bridge will be 3.5 metres wide. This will give cyclists and pedestrians enough room to pass each other safely. Signs will also be placed to show how the bridge should be used.
The new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians across the Meuse will be called the BoBo bridge.
The name BoBo refers to the places the bridge will connect: Boschpoort and Bosscherveld on one side, and Borgharen on the other.
It also has a historical link. Bobo was the name of a Frankish man from the early Middle Ages. His name was found on a bronze buckle excavated in Borgharen. In this way, the bridge’s name connects not only the 2 sides of the river, but also the new bridge with the history of the area.
The bridge is part of the municipality’s protocol for high water levels. During high water levels or severe weather conditions, we will take measures to protect the bridge. Sometimes this means temporarily closing the bridge. This helps us keep the bridge safe.
