Share your thoughts on the omgevingsvisie

How can we design Maastricht to be a healthy city for everyone? What does that mean for things like playgrounds, sports fields, shops, community spaces and green areas? These are the kinds of questions we’re addressing in the 'omgevingsvisie' or environmental vision: our plan for spatial development. To get it right, we need your input – for example, by sharing your thoughts on the draft version. You can respond up to and including 29 August 2025.

Looking back

As a municipality, we want to be more visible in the city and engage directly with residents. That’s why we held area visits in 2023. The municipal executive visited all 7 areas of Maastricht to talk with residents, meet people and hear what matters most to them. That same year, we also started conversations about the omgevingsvisie. In September 2024, we launched an online survey asking for your views on 6 key topics, which were identified during earlier public sessions and the city consultation on the vision:

  • Space for meeting others
  • Greening the city
  • Encouraging active lifestyles
  • Suitable housing options
  • An attractive city centre
  • Water safety

Everyone in Maastricht was invited to take part, with special attention given to young people and young adults aged 18 to 35. You can view the survey results on the Maastricht in Cijfers website (in Dutch).

What happens next?

The municipal council will make a final decision on the omgevingsvisie in January 2026. In the meantime, we’ll be reviewing and processing all the feedback we’ve received from residents.

The municipal council can provide comments and points for consideration – as it did on 9 April 2025 when the preliminary version of the omgevingsvisie was discussed. Check out the input we received (in Dutch).

Using the feedback from residents, local organisations, Maastricht's burgerberaad (citizens'assembly) and the municipal council, we've now created a draft version of the omgevingsvisie (in Dutch). This draft is available for public consultation from early July to 29 August 2025.

In September, we’ll hold an open drop-in session to explain how the final version will reflect all the input and suggestions we’ve received.

The municipal council will consider all responses before making its final decision in January 2026.

Have your say

What is the omgevingsvisie?

The omgevingsvisie is our long-term plan for spatiol development in Maastricht. It sets out how the goals from Maastricht’s broader stadsvisie (city vision) translate into practical choices for the layout of the city – including where we place shops, build houses, create green spaces, and support opportunities for sport and social connection. It’s also about where we allow for businesses, how we adapt to climate challenges, and how we make neighbourhoods more liveable. In short, it’s like a written map of the city’s future.

The current version was adopted in 2020, before ‘a healthy city’ became the leading principle in our city vision. It also doesn’t yet include important topics like housing and energy – issues that are now central to our future plans.
