Natural gas-free Limmel

Why Limmel?

The municipality has the task of making all homes in Maastricht natural gas-free by 2050. We are exploring the options district by district, as each area has its own characteristics and opportunities. The redevelopment of the TregaZinkwit site also creates new possibilities to get started in the rest of Limmel. Together, we are looking into what the best alternative to natural gas could be.

Because of the presence of Koninklijke Mosa and the wastewater treatment plant, a heat network is one of the potential solutions for Limmel. On the page Warmtenetten in Maastricht (in Dutch), you can read what a heat network is and how it works. This option is being considered alongside other alternatives such as heat pumps. Limmel is not the only district where we are carrying out this early exploration. Similar work is taking place in several other districts.

We are coming to you with the Warm Wonen Karavaan: a cosy meeting place where you can ask all your questions about energy, saving and living. But we also want to hear from you.

There will be fun activities for children and the Wheel of the Future with great prizes. Of course, we will also provide coffee, tea, lemonade and snacks.

We would like to hear what is going on

The Warm Wonen Karavaan is not only there to inform. We are mainly coming to the neighbourhood to listen. We are curious about your experiences with living comfort, energy costs and saving energy in your home. What is going well? What could be improved? And what do you need to take steps towards natural gas-free living?

Especially for tenants

There is a separate place where tenants can share their questions and experiences about comfort, maintenance and energy costs. This allows us to take these signals into account. Your input helps us to make a plan that really suits Limmel.

Files and reports

On 25 November, the first meeting for the Natural Gas-Free Limmel project took place. Interested local residents were present to hear about the start of the implementation plan for the neighbourhood. This plan describes how Limmel will eventually become natural gas-free. The municipality will draw up this plan together with residents and entrepreneurs from Limmel.
Project leader Audrey Luhulima explained the implementation plan and how we will draw it up together with residents. There was also time to ask questions and share concerns.
What is the implementation plan?
The municipality of Maastricht is working neighbourhood by neighbourhood to make the city natural gas-free. For Limmel, we are mapping out the steps that need to be taken and the wishes and concerns that exist in the neighbourhood.
What are the technical possibilities?
Esther Snepvangers (Tauw) gave an overview of the technical possibilities for making homes natural gas-free. The different types of homes and years of construction in Limmel were discussed, as were sustainable alternatives to natural gas. The alternatives that will be investigated in the coming period are (electric) heat pumps and a heat network.
What do residents consider important?
Residents were able to give their opinions on sustainability through a series of statements. Personal experiences were shared, along with concerns about costs and practical questions. The atmosphere was positive and there was room for critical questions and comments.
What next?
At the beginning of 2026, we will return to the neighbourhood to involve residents in thinking about the best solution for the neighbourhood. We hope to see you then! The information gathered will be included in the implementation plan.

On 25 November 2025, the first neighbourhood meeting on natural gas-free living in Limmel took place. Around 30 residents attended, asking critical questions and contributing ideas for solutions. The atmosphere was open and engaged.
During this meeting, we announced that there would be three information evenings. However, based on the discussions during and after the meeting, we have decided to organise this differently.
What are we going to do?
Instead of three information evenings, we are organising various activities in the neighbourhood itself. You will find us on the streets and in the squares. If you see us, feel free to come and talk to us.
You can then:
ask questions about natural gas-free living
get information about saving energy
indicate what you consider important for your home and the neighbourhood
When will we be in the neighbourhood?
We will let you know when and where we will be in the neighbourhood. Keep an eye on your letterbox and this website.
What will happen to your input?

We will use the information and responses we collect in the neighbourhood for the Limmel implementation plan. The implementation plan outlines the steps needed to make the neighbourhood natural gas-free, as well as the wishes and concerns of the neighbourhood.

What can you do yourself?

You can start today with simple measures that offer immediate benefits, such as insulation. This saves a lot of energy, especially in homes built before 1992. Homes built after 1992 are often already well insulated.
