Waste collection points in Limmel

The Municipality of Maastricht is introducing a new way of collecting waste. In Limmel, this means installing waste collection points with underground containers for residual waste. This page explains what this means for residents of Limmel.

Where will waste collection points be installed in Limmel?

In October 2026, the municipal executive decided on some of the locations for waste collection points in Limmel. The map below shows which locations have been approved.

Residents were previously able to give feedback on the proposed locations at the information meeting on 11 May 2026 and through an online form. The municipal executive considered residents' feedback and the results of further investigations before making its decision. This means that some of the approved locations may differ from those originally proposed.

Questions were also raised during the information meeting and through the online form. You can read the answers on the page Waste collection points in Maastricht.

Following feedback from residents, we reviewed the proposed location again. We looked at several factors, including how close it was to the balconies of nearby homes. We therefore decided to change the location and split the waste collection point between 2 sites. The 2 residual waste containers will be placed near Emmausstraat 42, on the grass verge next to the lamppost. The food waste container will be placed near Amazonstraat 35. Part of the hedge will need to be removed to make room for it.

Following feedback from residents, we reviewed the proposed location at Jerichoplein. We considered concerns about the layout and the impact on the immediate surroundings.

This assessment confirmed that the location is suitable for a waste collection point. We considered road safety, access for the vehicle that empties the containers, the distance from homes and how far residents would need to walk.

We found no alternative locations that would offer a better solution. The location at Jerichoplein will therefore be retained. We will take the concerns raised into account when finalising the layout and managing the site.

🟢 Green – approved location

The municipal executive has made a decision on this location.

Why have some locations not yet been approved?

Some locations require further investigation. For example, feedback from residents or the municipality's own investigations may have raised questions about the exact position or layout of a waste collection point.

Once these investigations are complete, the municipal executive will make a decision on the remaining locations. Until then, they will be marked as proposed locations on the map.

What did we do with your feedback?

We have collected and reviewed all the feedback received. The municipal executive took residents' feedback and the results of the municipality's investigations into account when making its decision. For locations where a decision has not yet been made, this information will be considered as part of the further assessment.

What can I do if I disagree with the decision?

If you disagree with a decision about the location of a waste collection point, you can lodge a formal objection. You must do this within 6 weeks of the date the decision was officially published.

The decision on the first group of locations was published on 13 October 2026. You can lodge an objection to these decisions up to and including 24 November 2026.

Your written objection must be signed and include your name and address, the date, a description of the decision and the reason or reasons for your objection.

You can send your objection to:

College van burgemeester en wethouders van Maastricht
Postbus 1992
6201 BZ Maastricht

You can also submit an objection online via the Objections page.

Make sure you have a plastic waste disposal pass

You need a plastic waste disposal pass (milieupas) to open the containers. The digital pass in the MilieuApp cannot be used for this. Don't have a plastic waste disposal pass yet?

When are waste collection points coming to Limmel?

Limmel is one of the first neighbourhoods where waste collection points will be installed. The timeline is as follows:

  • 11 May 2026: information meeting where residents could give feedback on the proposed locations
  • From October 2026: the municipal executive makes decisions on the locations of waste collection points
  • Autumn 2026: preparations and installation work at various locations across the neighbourhood
  • From April 2027: waste collection points will be brought into use.

Once the municipal executive has made a decision on a location, residents can lodge an objection. The objection period lasts 6 weeks. We will start installing the waste collection point once any objections have been dealt with.

Temporary above-ground containers

Sometimes it takes longer to deal with an objection, for example if a resident appeals after their objection has been considered. In such cases, we will install a temporary above-ground container. This does not require any work to be carried out in the street. The temporary container will be removed as soon as the underground containers can be installed.

Installing a waste collection point

Installing a waste collection point takes no more than 5 working days. Part of the road, pavement or grass verge will need to be dug up. The underground containers will then be installed, and the area will be restored afterwards.

If we expect the work to cause disruption to residents living in the street, we will inform them by letter.

When can I start using the waste collection point?

You cannot use a waste collection point immediately after it has been installed. It will first be fenced off with temporary construction barriers. Once the waste collection point is ready for use, you will receive a letter explaining when you can start using it and how it works.

What does this mean for you?

Once the waste collection points are ready for use:

  • the red-and-white residual waste bags will be phased out
  • you will take your residual waste to an underground container in your neighbourhood
  • you will open the container using your plastic waste disposal pass (milieupas).

If you live in a flat or apartment building, the waste collection point will also have containers for food waste, such as fruit, vegetables and food leftovers (gfe), alongside the residual waste containers.
