The Birds

After retiring from medicine, former GP Pierre Wielders now spends his days caring for 60 canaries.

Birds have always been part of Pierre Wielders' life. Even as a medical student, he kept a pair of canaries in his student room. But once he became a GP, there was little time left for his hobby. After retiring, Pierre finally had the chance to make up for lost time. For the past 13 years, he has been a member of De Vrolijke Veredelde Zangers (The Cheerful Refined Singers), Maastricht's canary club, which recently celebrated its 102nd anniversary.

Members share tips and knowledge on breeding healthy and beautiful birds. For example, canaries can develop brighter yellow feathers by eating marigolds, while carrots help enhance red colouring.

Today, Pierre cares for around 60 birds. He has two aviaries and a garden house containing 16 breeding cages. Looking after them keeps him busy for about an hour and a half every day. “The moment I enter the aviary, all the birds know I'm there,” he says. “If one of them doesn't react, I know something is wrong and that it may need extra care.”

Pierre also enters regional competitions, where his birds regularly achieve good results. “But don't imagine it's anything too special,” he laughs. “There are so many categories, from colour to posture, that it's not difficult to win a prize now and then.”
