Maastricht Citizens' Budget

What is a citizen's budget? A citizens’ budget lets local residents decide together how part of the public budget is spent. In Maastricht, this means funding projects that are proposed and selected by the community. In other words: it's up to you!

In Maastricht since 2020

Maastricht held its first Burgerbegroting (Citizens’ Budget) in 2020, with a joint budget of €300,000 from the municipality and the province of Limburg. It was a success – in 2023, the municipality made €750,000 available for the Citizens' Budget. The projects selected in the second round were carried out in 2024. For the 2024 edition, €798,452 was made available, and those projects are being carried out in 2025.

All projects from the 2022, 2023 and 2024 editions are listed on the Projects page. The projects from this year's edition will be available on the Thuis in Maastricht website from 11 December 2025.

In 2025, the municipality is once again making €750,000 available for Burgerbegroting Maastricht (Maastricht Citizens’ Budget).

What's important to us

  • We believe in putting residents in the lead. The Citizens’ Budget gives you the space, resources, and support to bring good ideas to life.
  • Everyone is welcome to take part—whether you vote online, attend the final event, submit a proposal or just want to support others’ ideas. Every voice counts.
  • We’re also doing our best to reach people across the city, including in areas where few projects have been realised so far.
  • We value real connections between residents. That’s why there will be a live final event where people come together and vote on the submitted ideas.
